Countdown ‘Til Daddy Comes Home: Review and Giveaway

I’m not going to lie, when I get emails asking me to review your books, I’m pretty darn humbled.  I know how hard it is to write something with your soul and put it out on display for the world to see.  I’m the biggest cheerleader of anyone working away at their computer, their typewriter, their notebook.

Kristin Ayyar is an Air Force spouse, and author of “Countdown ‘Til Daddy Comes Home.”

This book is a fantastic read-along with your small children to help prepare them for separation from their parent, filled with ideas to help them countdown the days until they can be reunited.  I love that it addresses real feelings, especially because in our house, whether our boys are happy, sad, or downright angry, we validate feelings.

This book speaks to a wide audience of children, meaning to reach out to those families who are not “typical” deployers and civilian families as well.  Kristin has done a great job of showing the normalcy of life that continues in a parent’s absence, while giving kids great ideas of how to keep connected through treasure boxes, voice-recorded books, and the rituals military families know all too well.

The only drawback to this book for our family is that “Countdown ‘Til Daddy Comes Home” isn’t focused on the military or deployment, which in our house is essential to understand why Dad is going away.  However, since the book doesn’t address the why, it speaks to a broad audience not restrained to the military.

My favorite part of this book is definitely the discussion questions in the back.  If you’ve ever been at a loss as to how to start a conversation with your children about an upcoming separation, these will guide you through it.  Even if you’ve endured separations and deployments before, the questions give your children a much-needed opportunity to share their feelings.

I would recommend this book not only to military families who endure deployments, but to civilian families who go through separations as well.  Well done, Kristin!

What’s even better?  She’s using a portion of the profits to donate to military charities!  Who doesn’t love her now?

For you awesome readers out there, Kristin is giving away a signed copy of her book, “Countdown ‘Til Daddy Comes Home, so you can have it before it’s officially released!
