I had a different post planned for today, and I’m sure I’ll get around to it, but it felt wrong not to acknowledge the amazing things that have happened since last week.
About seven weeks ago, I wrote a letter to my little boys. Why? Because I’ve been terrified to see the world they’re growing up in, the callous way that not just boys, but girls too, are treating one another, hurting one another without thought.
So, I wrote THIS letter, and asked my boys to be kind.
Something happened last week, and I’m really not sure what triggered it, but my little 1,400 view post seemed to grow legs and run off into the world.
The amount of response blew me away. Over 86,000 people have read it, which has me gawking at my blog stats every few hours. I keep expecting it to slow down and temper out, but it doesn’t.
So no, this isn’t today’s post, but I just had to say thank you.
Thank you for reading it.
Thank you to the mom of every boy who said it helped them know what to say to their boys about sex. I can assure you with a 10 year-old, this is easier in letter form. The actual conversation is a wee bit more daunting.
Thank you to everyone who said it inspired their own letter, their own conversation with their kids about kindness, sexuality, self-respect, chivalry, and compassion.
Thank you to every mom of a girl who said she’s trying to raise a confident and kind woman. My boys need more of those in the world, that’s for sure. Look me up when they’re ready to date.
Thank you to those of you who are rape survivors and shared your stories through comments, emails, and posts. I am on my knees with sorrow for what you have endured, and yet so very uplifted and inspired by your strength and grace. You are the heroes here.
Thank you to those of you who didn’t agree with it, because a little introspection is a good thing.
Thank you for sharing it, tweeting it, blogging it, Plus 1’ing it (because I’m not cool enough for google lingo).
Since I started writing this a few minutes ago, another 58 people have read it.
Thank you for taking a moment out of your world to take a peek into mine.
You are all astonishing and amazing.
Okay, I promise, there’s a real post coming later, and it’s a doozie. 😉
