Welcome to the first (hopefully weekly) installment of You Could Be Reading!
I couldn’t help it, that was just too funny. Plus, I’d do just about anything those boys asked.
I love books, not just because I write, but because they suck me into a world where anything is possible. That’s not to say I don’t love my life, but if I don’t read, then my life is the only life I’ll experience, and I’m a greedy girl who wants to experience it ALL.
So once a week, I’m giving a shout-out to the books I love, books that if you haven’t read, maybe you could give a second glance to, because they’re worth it. Now, down to the fun part.
This week, you could be reading… Beautiful Creatures, and it’s on sale for $2.99!!!
Still don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, lucky for us, the movie is out this weekend, so you can get a sneak peek at how awesome the book must be through previews and .gifs. And yes, in my humble opinion, books should always be read before the movies are watched. Especially this one, because the endings are really nothing alike. Sigh.
Why this book? Because it rocks. They had me at Gothic Southern witchcraft, a male point of view, and a female main character who is full of spunk and attitude. I have to admit, wimpy heroines annoy me, because they’re not really heroines, so Lena is rockin’ awesome.
What’s it about? Ethan Wate’s been dreaming about a mysterious girl for months, and when Lena Duchannes comes to his small-minded town of Gatlin, South Carolina, strange and wonderful things begin to happen. Things like:
Lena is coming into her Caster powers, and while she’s becoming immensely powerful, she’s also having a huge problem controlling her gift, so falling for a Mortal isn’t exactly helping the situation. But first love has a power all of its own.
When Lena turns sixteen, her powers will be claimed for either the light or the dark, and because of a century-old family curse, she fears she will have no choice in the claiming. What happens next? You could be reading it… =)
I loved this book because Ethan is strong, courageous, and able to stand beside a girl whose abilities make her the extraordinary one in the relationship. He fights for what he wants, and his tenacity and dedication to the girl he loves is inspiring.
I love Lena because she’s conflicted between her desire for normalcy, the boy she loves, and fighting what she thinks is her destiny. If you’ve seen my MS, you’d know that I love girls who fight their destiny.
Little extras? I love the gorgeous world these authors bring to life, and the spot-on Southern way of life that I miss from living in Alabama. I’m also a sucker for love, romance, and defying the odds.
The only flaw? The ending leaves me feeling like absolutely nothing is resolved, which would really perturb me, but there’s three other books in the series, so it really gives me a reason to hunt ’em down!
Still haven’t hooked you?
